One of these repairs might be a vehicle air conditioner recharge.  Occasionally you will need a car AC recharge when the air from your AC system begins to lose power and the air doesn’t feel cold anymore. An auto AC recharge means adding more refrigerant to your vehicle’s AC system to keep your car’s cabin cool in hot weather.

It must be noted, however, that an auto air conditioner recharge is a temporary fix to a likely bigger problem. If your system is indeed missing refrigerant, your AC system has a leak and needs to be inspected and repaired by a certified mechanic. Refrigerant does not evaporate in an airtight system so air is leaking in. A Vehicle AC recharge is considered a repair for professionals, as it contains work with hazardous liquid and is best performed by a certified mechanic.

Do you know how A/C systems work?

Your car’s air conditioning system cools and circulates air throughout the vehicle to promote a comfortable cabin temperature and prevent driver fatigue. The air conditioning system operates in a continuous cycle, sending refrigerant through a sealed system to remove hot air from the cabin compartment.

  • A typical automobile A/C System without leaks loses one ounce of refrigerant per year, which is considered normal.
  • When your car’s A/C System is only low by just a few ounces, it will affect the air temperature coming from the vents by as much as 10 degrees.

Auto AC Recharge Information

In January 1992, federal regulations were enacted to ensure that persons repairing or servicing motor vehicle air conditioners were certified and trained in using approved refrigerant recycling equipment.  Our technicians are certified in the handling of both R12 & R134 refrigerant (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automotive-air-conditioning.htm), and we adhere to all state and federal regulations regarding vehicle A/C systems.

With modern air conditioning systems, it is more important than ever to be sure the refrigerant levels are correct. A little too much and compressor damage may be the result.  If it just a bit low, once again the a/c compressor can be damaged.  Alamo Auto A/C follows the federal standards, and our professional team of technicians provides the following service:

  • Analyze complete system performance and check for leaks
  • Recover the contained refrigerants.
  • Recycle those refrigerants, restoring the system to peak performance
  • Pressure test the system to assure that it is efficiently providing maximum comfort

Common Misdiagnoses and Mistakes

  • Performing a car AC recharge to a poorly functioning AC system without first diagnosing the problem may result in “overcharging”. This has been known to cause damage to the AC compressor, resulting in a very expensive, and avoidable, repair.
  • Freon with Stop Leak are not recommended, as they are only temporary solutions and can damage the AC system’s components, resulting in expensive repairs.
