A vehicle’s transmission is the missing link in the communication between the engine and the wheels. The transmission not only allows for movement of your vehicle it allows for speed guidance. The transmission ‘transmits’ (hence the namesake) the energy from the engine into the wheels at whatever interval you are trying to go. Transmissions also determine manual or automatic gear shifting. If the transmission is automatic it will do the shifting and clutching on its own. Although automatic transmissions have become the norm in most parts of the United States, manual transmissions have some benefits for those who like to have a bit more control over their vehicle.
Transmissions are an extremely important part of any vehicle, and as such must have regular maintenance preformed on them. Without regular maintenance the transmission may need to be repaired, rebuilt or replaced. Here are some signs that you may need to take your vehicle to a trusted auto body shop to be diagnosed:
SKIPPING
When a vehicle starts to experience a breakdown in action and reaction (the action of you stepping on the gas and the reaction of the vehicle accelerating for example) there is an issue somewhere. Unfortunately, the issue is sometimes the transmission; a more costly repair than the air filter, which can produce the same issues.
WEIRD SMELLS
Transmission fluid has an oddly sweet smell. When there is an issue and the fluid is burning that smell turns very noticeable. If you smell something akin to burning carpet or roasted sugar; have the transmission checked out quickly. The longer the issue in the transmission persists the more likely repairs will be extensive.
LEAKING
Whenever you start to notice any puddles under your vehicle the alarm bells should start. To make sure this is transmission fluid, first check the transmission fluid levels inside the vehicle. If they are low or do not have a clear, pinkish tinge; something is wrong. Your best bet is to get your vehicle checked by a trusted technician so that the problem can be fixed as soon as possible.
